Hi folks! Today I wanted to share with you a few tips to create your perfect home office. There has never been a better time than now to have a space to work, and obviously, you need to love it.
I won’t lie, I do pride myself with my home office, I get many compliments and it has become a sort of sanctuary for me. I remember when Angus and I were first looking at flats to rent, I said that I wanted a desk space for myself. Little did I know, that I was going to have a whole room! This space is where I do my PGCE work, where I write blog posts, create YouTube videos, plan my week and right now, teaching remotely. So it is crucial for me to have somewhere cosy and comfortable, but also functional.
So whether you’re working at the kitchen table, or you have the luxury of your own room, you can follow these tips to create your perfect home office!
How did I create my perfect home office?
Make Use of Natural Daylight
I’m lucky in that I have full length window to the left of my desk which does let in a lot of natural light. I try through the day to make use of this as much as possible, without using the main ceiling light. I find that artificial light can really trigger headaches, especially when paired with looking at a screen all day! Plus, it saves on electricity, so if you can create a workspace as close to a window as possible, you’re onto a winner.
Get a Desk
Duh. Did I say anymore? I got a white desk from Ikea, which is ideal for anyone on a budget, and also looks great in any room! I like it because it is so long and has two drawers as well, so great for storing all my stationary bits and pieces! If you haven’t got your own room, try to avoid sitting on the bed or the sofa. If you can, find a table and set up there so that becomes your workspace. This is so important if you want to keep your work and home life separate!
Tidy Space = Tidy Mind
What I love about my desk is that there isn’t that much on top of it, on show, cluttering up space. I like to keep the top of my desk fairly minimalistic, free from distractions with just the most important things out. Most days, I will get my planner out as well and keep that next to me and obviously I also need a little notepad and pen for quick note taking! If I have too much out on my desk, I can get so distracted, so easily. At the end of each day, I like to clear my space again, close my laptop and almost ‘reset’ my desk. This means when I wake up in the morning, it’s a ready to work out and I don’t need to worry about any distractions! Then, I usually just get out my laptop, my Happy Planner and a drink and try to keep to at just those things throughout the day.
Make Use of Storage
So in order to keep your desk clear, you need space to put everything else that you don’t want out! I have the Ikea Alex drawers next to my desk, which houses all of my hair & makeup bits, spare toiletries and printer paper, and then anything else that needs a home! This means all the clutter stays within these drawers rather than out on the desk. As I mentioned before, I also have the two drawers in my desk which I use to keep all my stationary and craft bits & pieces, and I also have a planner cart which I use to store all of my planner supplies!
Pick a Theme, then Stick to it!
My theme for my office, is whites, pinks and greys (mainly because the carpet is grey and I can’t change that!). I love having really neutral and pastelly colours in my office, nothing too bright and in your face! That is why all of the furniture is white, and I had pops of colour here and there. Above my desk I have this beautiful poster from Photowall* which ties in with the rest of the room so well. It’s a beautiful piece of art which definitely brings in some colour into the room and brightens my day every time I sit in front of it.

I really recommend investing in an office chair. I got mine from Ikea and have had it for 2 and a half years. You don’t have to spend a lot of money (although you can!) to be comfortable. I can easily sit all day in mine and still be comfortable. I have also added a blanket on the back along with one of these faux sheepskin white rugs from Primark to make it look that little bit prettier and it also adds a bit of extra padding for my back!
Also, you want to enjoy being in your office. Why not add some candles or fairy lights to create a bit of ambience in your room? If I ever need to work in the evening, it creates the most relaxing and peaceful workspace for me and I find I can be really productive. Even having a candle lit through the day can help encourage you to stay at your desk!
